Edema Q & A

What is edema?

Edema is swelling of the body tissue from a buildup of fluid. Edema most often affects the feet, ankles, and legs. However, you can also develop swelling in your face, hands, or abdomen.

Edema is common. In most cases, the swelling is mild and goes away on its own. However, edema is sometimes a symptom of an underlying health issue that may involve your kidneys or blood vessels.

Hypertension Nephrology Associates, PC, has been providing expert health services to those living in and around the Detroit metropolitan area since 1975. The practice has physicians board-certified in nephrology and hypertension, as well as internal medicine.

What causes edema?

You can develop edema from many causes. Some causes are less serious than others. For example, eating too much salt or spending long periods of time on your feet. Additionally, edema is common during pregnancy.

You may also develop edema as a symptom of underlying health conditions like:

  • Heart failure
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Thyroid disease
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)

Allergic reactions may also cause edema. Or, you may have edema as a side effect from a medication.

What happens during an edema evaluation?

Hypertension Nephrology Associates, PC, conducts a patient-centered exam when you come in with concerns about edema. Your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, medical history, and family history.

They do a physical exam, paying close attention to the area of the body where you have the swelling. They perform a simple, noninvasive skin test to grade the severity of your edema.

Your provider may run lab work to confirm or rule out the cause of your edema. They may also request a vascular ultrasound to assess circulation through your arteries and veins.

What are the treatments for edema?

Treatment for edema depends on the cause. Your provider at Hypertension Nephrology Associates, PC, customizes your treatment plan to reduce the swelling and improve the root cause of edema.

Treatment for edema might include:

  • Medical management of the underlying cause
  • Diet and nutrition education
  • Diuretics
  • Keeping your feet elevated
  • Not sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time

In most cases, the swelling improves within a few days after starting treatment.
